The wards and communities of the Township of Rideau Lakes have a rich heritage. This area was used for millennia by Native Americans as a travel route and rich fishing ground. The first surveys were done in the late 1700s with settlers arriving soon thereafter.
The Township is also host to a large section of the Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the only such site in Ontario.
The Development Services Department is responsible for the review and processing of all applications under the Planning Act and the Ontario Building Code; ensuring compliance with the Township’s Official Plan, Zoning By-Law, other Municipal By-Laws, and the Ontario Building Code; as well as providing current and long-term planning services.
The Township offers many recreation facilities including numerous trails, softball diamonds, tennis courts, forested areas and waterfront beaches.
By-Law 2006-85 is the "Safe Properties" By-Law which outlines the keeping of properties as it relates to the health, safety and welfare of the municipality and its inhabitants. Anyone who has a concern about the condition of a property as outlined in the By-Law, should email the By-Law Services.
Please note: All names of persons making complaints are kept confidential to protect privacy. It is strongly recommended that the person making the complaint provide their name and contact information in writing as anonymous and/or verbal complaints will not be investigated by the municipality.
A By-Law Enforcement Officer may inspect the property of concern and identify the areas that contravene the By-Law. The owner of the property is given an identified timeframe to comply with an Order. The outcome of the investigation is not provided to the complainant as that information is also kept confidential to protect privacy.

Rideau Lakes was entered into the Province-wide “Communities in Bloom” contest in 2004, which inspired the Township Beautification Committee to introduce a local garden contest. Over 100 gardens were judged in the 14 years of the contest. Local dignitaries were called upon to act as judges, and Town and Country Chrysler supplied a vehicle for the judges to travel in while viewing the gardens. In 2018, the top three communities who won received a red maple tree as their prize.

The Township of Rideau Lakes has a pre-authorized payment plan (PAP) for paying your taxes in 10 installments with the final installment to be adjusted according to the assessment and budgetary changes. Almost 1800 ratepayers have taken advantage of the plan.
Unless we are notified in writing, ratepayers that took advantage of the plan last year will automatically continue to make their tax payments this way.
The pre-authorized plan will begin in February each year. It will consist of 10 monthly payments. Each payment will be approximately one tenth of the previous year’s total tax levy on the property. The 10th and final monthly payment will also reflect any budgetary adjustments in your municipal taxes.
Payments will be withdrawn on the last business day of each of the 10 months and credited to your account. Your final debit will be the last business day in November.
Only ratepayers that do not have any tax arrears will be allowed to enroll in the PAP plan.
The ratepayer may cancel the PAP plan provided that written notice is given at least 14 days prior to a payment date.
Property owners who sign up for this program are responsible and have a duty to notify the tax office if they are planning to sell their property.
Please note: all debits to accounts that are not honoured by the bank will be subject to a returned item charge of $53.00.
Yes, you will still receive an interim bill. However, this will be a statement only for your records. An additional payment is not required. You will also receive a final tax bill for your review and records. Supplemental billings cannot be included in the PAP calculation and therefore must be paid by the ratepayer using another optional payment method.
Bank Service Charges may apply.
Search for "Rideau Lakes (Township) Taxes" in the payee list. Your "account number" is your 19-digit roll number (0831XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX), which can be found on your tax bill. Do not enter spaces or decimals when entering the account number.
If you have more than one property EVERY Roll Number must be setup as a separate account.
