PUBLIC NOTICE: NOTICE OF INTENTION TO DESIGNATE

Published: Monday, 22 April 2024

TAKE NOTICE that the Council of The Corporation of the Township of Rideau Lakes intends to designate lands and premises described as (10 Brock Street in Newboro, also known as the Rideau Lakes Library – Newboro Branch), and municipally known as Roll No. 083184104109100, 10 Brock Street, Newboro, Ontario in the Township of Rideau Lakes, County of Leeds and Grenville, as a property of cultural heritage value or interest under Part IV, S. 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act, R.S.O. 1990.

Description of Property

The municipally owned property at 10 Brock Street in Newboro, Ontario, in the Township of Rideau Lakes, consists of a one-storey building that is currently housing the Newboro Branch of the Rideau Lakes Public Library.

Statement of Cultural Heritage Significance

Built in 1846, the building on the property at 10 Brock Street in Newboro has design/physical value as an example of schoolhouse architecture. The property has historical/associative value for its associations, through its early ownership by the Trustees of the Union School, for its subsequent period as a courthouse, and through its current owner, the Corporation of the Township of Rideau Lakes, in housing the Newboro branch of the Rideau Lakes Public Library for administration and community use. Rideau Lakes Heritage Advisory Committee members note that the property was sold in 1844. The 1851 school reports indicate that the building was constructed in 1846. The property has contextual value for maintaining and supporting the character of the village of Newboro, its location at the corner of Simcoe and Brock Streets, and for being historically linked to other developments in the vicinity, and for its role as a visual landmark.

Notice of Objection

Any person wishing to file a notice of objection to the designation must file such notice of objection together with a statement of reasons, with the Clerk of the municipality within 30 days (by Saturday, May 25, 2024), after the date of publication of this notice in the Review Mirror Newspaper.
